Lincoln Lake Bypass completion? 11-21-09

Due to the recent flooding our pedestrian bridge was destroyed. We have decided to reroute the trail around the creek. Yes once again I sure could use a volunteer or two for this project. Sorry I forgot to put in the date the last time but we still had a good group. the new trail is looking great with really nice views. I hope to complete it this go round. We are expecting rain Friday but it should be moving out by Saturday morning. If there is light rain we will still work. We will be moving rocks more then digging so a little wet won't hurt anything. Just bring yourself, gloves, water, and something to munch on. The city provides tools. We will meet Saturday morning 11-21-09 at 9 am in the Lincoln Lake Parking area. We will be working very near the vehicles. To get there drive into Lincoln on 62 west and look for the Lincoln Lake sign. Take 669 north to the lake about 3 1/2 miles.

Forum: HIKING / BACKPACKING FORUM

Stop by Lewis & Clark in Rogers THIS SATURDAY, November 21st at 3:00 for an hour-long basic backpacking clinic. Or drop by the store anytime and pick up our three page Backpacking outline along with lots of other great outdoor destination guides surrounding the big map of Arkansas next to the Hydration Station.
http://www.gooutandplay.com/goap/events/index.shtml

Forum: HIKING / BACKPACKING FORUM

Rogers Trail system

Update for the City of Rogers trail system - the section known as: Turtle Creek 4C (this link shows the overall map with all sections labeled http://uark.edu/misc/partners/rgt/TrailKeyMap-a.jpg) has recently been completed.

If you're familiar with the trails, this section heads NE from the "boardwalk" area and ends at 24th street, between the railroad tracks and Mathias Elementary. The trail winds thru some heavily wooded areas and has good access to a small creek on the north side of the trail.

Cambridge park to the west or Mathias Elementary to the east are good points for parking.

Another improvement is the trail crossing Olive street, to the south of this area, now has button activated crossing lights to stop traffic.

Forum: GO OUT AND PLAY

Lincoln Lake Bypass Trail Work 11-07-09

Due to the recent flooding our pedestrian bridge was destroyed. We have decided to reroute the trail around the creek. The trail has already been marked but now we need people to help bench cut and move rocks. We will meet at Lincoln lake. Tools will be provided by the city. All you will need to bring are gloves, water, food, and a willingness to build trail. To get to the park take highway 62 west from Fayetteville to Lincoln about 20 miles. Look for the Lincoln lake signs when entering Lincoln. Take county 669 north about 3 and a half miles to the lake. Meeting time 9am.

Forum: GO OUT AND PLAY

Hawksbill Crag

If you have never visited Hawksbill Crag - it's a great place for a hike. My wife and I visited there last weekend. It's a 3 mile hike that ends in some spectacular views. Also, make sure and take a good camera and someone to take pictures (it's more fun with friends anyway), as this is one of the most photographed places in Arkansas.

While many people just focus on the overlook, there are some cool waterfalls along the way that provide some great scenery. I have included pictures below.

To get there from Northwest Arkansas, take Highway 412 East, then down Highway 21 toward Ponca. You will come to an intersection, where you can either turn left and go to Ponca on Highway 43, or go south on Highway 21. Stay south on 21, and go about 1 mile. Right before you cross a bridge over the Buffalo River, you will see a gravel road on the right (Cave Mountain Road - though it's not marked); Go 6 miles up this road (and I mean up) and you will come to the trailhead. There are only a few parking spaces, so most people park on the side of the road.

Also, during your trip be sure to visit the folks at Buffalo Outdoor Center and Lost Valley Canoe and Lodging (they have the best homemade beef jerkey in town), as visiting the locals there is part of the experience.

Pictures below.

http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?pid=4227050&id=738180902

http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?pid=4281656&id=738180902

http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?pid=4227048&id=738180902

http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?pid=4227049&id=738180902

Forum: HIKING / BACKPACKING FORUM

Devils Den Hike 10-17-09

What: Devil's Den Off Trail

When: October 17, 2009 8:30-9:00 AM

Join us for an off trail hike around the Devils Den area. This hike will be rated Difficult because of all the bushwacking and scrambling over rocks and boulders. It will not be pet or small child friendly. It will actually be 2 hikes, so you could leave after the first.

We will meet at the Joes commuter parking lot at hwy 412 and 540 at 8:00am and car pool to the Devils Den Pavilion parking lot near the swinging bridge. This is just past the swimming pool and the damn. Or if you wish you can just meet at the Devils Den Pavilion parking lot between 8:30 and 9:00am. Devils Den is about a 40 minute drive from south Fayetteville. David Justice will be leading this hike. David is the trail master at Lake Lincoln park.

At 9:00am well leave the Devils Den Pavilion parking lot and carpool up to Holt Road parking. The first hike will include parts of Butterfield trail and bushwhacking over to Phobes Cave. The cave entry and exit points are very near each other. Bring a flash light if you want to enter the caveor you can just rest there while the others go in. This cave has a very tight exit point, known as the birth canal. You have to squeeeeeeeze between a rock and tree to get out and it offers and amusing sight for those already out or waiting outside. From the cave well loop back by the rock quarry and take Hold Road back to our cars, and drive back to Devils Den parking lot below Yollow Rock trail.

The second half of the hike will take us on the lake trail to Fossil Flats trail head. We will bushwhack up to below Yellow Rock and check out some wonderful scenery from below the point. We will hike to a seasonal waterfall and climb out to the Yellow Rock trail and complete the loop to return to the parking area.

Bring a lunch, lots of water, bug spray, and a flashlight if you want to go in the cave. Good hiking shoes are also recommended. Total distance will be apx 7 miles, broken into two hikes and again, it is rated difficult. As always, members hike at their own risk.

Learn more here:
http://www.meetup.com/nwahiking/calendar/11518792/

Forum: HIKING / BACKPACKING FORUM
